A Seiko that tells you the time out loud, in Japanese. Reference A862-00A0, calibre A862: this is Seiko's voice digital watch, a line designed for visually impaired users and made for the Japanese market. Press the button and the watch announces the time through the grille of holes on the dial, where the speaker sits.
The tonneau-shaped case is two-tone, matte grey with a gold-toned bezel, around a burgundy-brown dial and a small LCD display. The caseback also marks a stopwatch function. Made in 2006 according to its serial number. The watch comes on a Seiko-signed strap with a crocodile-pattern finish and a Seiko-signed folding clasp.
Why we love it
Most watches show you the time. This one says it. Seiko built its voice digital watches for people who cannot read a dial, and made them for Japan, so they speak nothing but Japanese. Press the button and a calm voice announces the hour through the little grille above the screen. Outside Japan, a useful everyday object becomes a curiosity: a Seiko that talks in a language its owner may not speak. The two-tone tonneau case and the burgundy dial have a distinctly retro look, even though this one was made in 2006.

- Case: matte grey finish with light marks; gold-toned bezel worn and discoloured in places along its edge.
- Dial and display: clean; the digits shown are complete.
- Caseback: brushed, with light scratches; held by four screws; engravings legible.
- Strap: Seiko-signed, crocodile-pattern finish, with scuffs and light marks on the outer side and used holes.
- Clasp: Seiko-signed folding clasp with surface scratches.
